Privacy policy

Effective date: September 8, 2026

Your privacy matters to us. At Slam Academy, we follow a few fundamental principles:

  • We are thoughtful about the personal information we ask you to provide and the personal information we collect about you through the operation of our services.
  • We store personal information for only as long as we have a reason to keep it.
  • We aim to make it as simple as possible for you to see, correct, download, and delete the information we hold about you.
  • We aim for full transparency on how we gather, use, and share your personal information.

Below is our Privacy Policy, which incorporates and clarifies these principles.

Who We Are and What This Policy Covers

Slam Academy LLC ("Slam Academy," "we," "us," or "our") is an electronic music school and Ableton Certified Training Center based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We teach music production, DJing, and related skills through online courses, live online classes, in-person classes, memberships, and events.

This Privacy Policy applies to information that we collect about you when you use:

  • Our websites, including slamacademy.com and its subdomains;
  • Our online courses, live online classes, memberships, and learning tools;
  • Our in-person classes and workshops in Minneapolis;
  • Our events and retreats, including travel-based programs;
  • Our email newsletters and marketing communications; and
  • Our community spaces, such as our Discord server, to the extent we collect information there.

Throughout this Privacy Policy we refer to these collectively as the "Services."

This Privacy Policy does not cover:

  • Third-party platforms we use to deliver the Services (for example, the platform that hosts our Discord community, or the video service that hosts a live class). Those platforms have their own privacy policies that govern their own collection of information from you.
  • Information we collect from our instructors, employees, contractors, or job applicants, which is governed by separate notices.

Slam Academy LLC is the controller of personal information collected through the Services. Our address is 1121 Jackson Street NE, Suite 142, Minneapolis, MN 55413, USA.

Below we explain how we collect, use, and share information about you, along with the choices you have with respect to that information.

Information We Collect

We only collect information about you if we have a reason to do so — for example, to provide the Services, to communicate with you, or to make the Services better.

We collect this information from three sources: when you provide it to us, automatically through operating the Services, and from outside sources.

Information You Provide to Us

  • Basic account information: To create an account we require an email address, a username, and a password. You may choose to provide additional information — such as your name, phone number, mailing address, country, date of birth, profession, or company — but except where noted below, that information is optional.
  • Public profile information: If you add information to your profile, such as a display name, photo, bio, or links to your music, that information may be visible to other students and instructors within the Services. Please keep that in mind when deciding what to include.
  • Payment and billing information: When you purchase a course, membership, event, or merchandise, your payment is processed by a third-party payment processor through a hosted checkout. We do not receive, store, or transmit your full payment card number. We receive and keep the information needed to manage your purchase, such as your name, billing address, the last four digits and type of your card, the amount, and the date of the transaction.
  • Learning information: As you take courses, we collect information about your progress, such as lessons completed, quiz and assignment results, certificates earned, and any projects, audio files, or other work you upload or submit for feedback.
  • Live class participation and recordings: Our live online classes are recorded. Recordings may capture your audio, video, screen share, and chat messages if you participate with those features enabled. Recordings are made available to enrolled students and are used to deliver and improve the class. You can participate without turning on your camera or microphone.
  • In-person class information: If you enroll in an in-person class, we collect the information needed to run it, such as your contact details and, if you tell us, any accessibility needs.
  • Event and travel information: If you register for a retreat or travel-based event, we collect information needed to organize it, which may include travel details, passport or identification information required by travel providers, emergency contact information, and any dietary or accessibility needs you choose to share with us.
  • Scholarship applications: If you apply for a scholarship, we collect the information you submit in your application, which may include information about your financial circumstances, background, and goals. We use this information only to evaluate your application.
  • Communications with us: You may provide information when you contact our support team, respond to a survey, participate in a community discussion, or reply to one of our emails. We keep a copy of these communications.
  • Marketing preferences: We keep a record of your choices about receiving marketing emails and, if you opt in, text messages.

Information We Collect Automatically

  • Log information: Like most online service providers, we collect information that web browsers, devices, and servers typically make available, including browser type, IP address, unique device identifiers, language preference, referring site, the date and time of access, and operating system.
  • Transactional information: When you make a purchase, we collect information about the transaction, such as the product, price, and date.
  • Usage information: We collect information about how you use the Services — for example, which pages and lessons you view, how far you progress through a course, which videos you watch and for how long, and which features you use. We use this to deliver the Services, understand how students learn, and improve our courses.
  • Location information: We determine the approximate location of your device from your IP address, for example to understand where our students are and to comply with regional legal requirements.
  • Information from cookies and similar technologies: A cookie is a small string of information that a website stores on your device and that your browser sends back each time you return. Pixel tags are small blocks of code placed on websites and in emails. We and our partners use cookies, pixel tags, and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, understand how the Services are used, measure the effectiveness of our email and advertising campaigns, and deliver targeted ads for the Services on other websites and platforms. For more information, including how to control cookies, please see our Cookie Policy.

Information We Collect from Other Sources

  • Third-party login: If you create or sign in to your account through another service (such as Google, Apple, Facebook, LinkedIn, or X), we receive the login information that service shares with us, such as a connection token, your name, and your email address.
  • Payment processor: Our payment processor sends us confirmation of your transactions and the limited billing details described above.
  • Advertising and analytics partners: Our advertising and analytics partners may provide us with information about how our ads and content perform, and may match information we provide (such as a hashed email address) with information they hold, as described in the Advertising section below.

The information we receive depends on which services you use or authorize and what options are available.

How and Why We Use Information

Purposes for Using Information

We use information about you for the purposes listed below:

  • To provide the Services. For example, to set up and maintain your account, enroll you in courses, deliver lessons and live classes, track your progress, issue certificates, process payments and orders, organize in-person classes and events, and provide customer support.
  • To ensure quality, maintain safety, and improve the Services. For example, by analyzing how students move through our courses so we can improve them, and by monitoring the Services for errors and abuse.
  • To market the Services and measure our marketing. For example, by sending you emails about new courses and events, showing you ads for the Services on other websites and platforms, and analyzing which campaigns lead people to enroll.
  • To protect the Services, our students, and the public. For example, by detecting security incidents; detecting and protecting against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity; complying with our legal obligations; and protecting the rights and property of Slam Academy and others.
  • To fix problems with the Services. For example, by monitoring, debugging, and repairing issues.
  • To personalize your experience. For example, by recommending courses based on those you have taken.
  • To communicate with you. For example, by emailing you about your account, your classes, and changes to the Services; asking for feedback; or sending you promotional messages. You can opt out of marketing communications at any time; we will still send you important messages about your account and purchases.
  • To evaluate scholarship applications and administer scholarships.
  • To comply with the law, including tax, accounting, and consumer-protection obligations.

If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction that requires us to identify a legal basis for processing, our use of your information is based on the following grounds:

  1. The use is necessary in order to fulfill our commitments to you under our Terms and Conditions or another agreement with you, or to administer your account — for example, to give you access to a course you purchased;
  2. The use is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation;
  3. The use is necessary to protect your vital interests or those of another person;
  4. We have a legitimate interest in using your information — for example, to provide and improve the Services, to safeguard the Services, to communicate with you, to measure and improve our marketing, and to understand how students use our courses — and that interest is not overridden by your rights; or
  5. You have given us your consent — for example, before we place non-essential cookies on your device or send you marketing messages where consent is required.

Sharing Information

How We Share Information

We share information about you in limited circumstances, and with appropriate safeguards on your privacy:

  • Service providers: We share information with third-party vendors who need it to provide their services to us. These include vendors that host our learning platform and website; process payments; deliver video, live-class, and recording functionality; store files; send email and text messages; help us provide customer support; provide analytics; help us run our advertising; and help us organize events and travel. We require vendors to agree to privacy and security commitments before we share information with them.
  • Instructors: Our instructors, some of whom are independent contractors, can see the information needed to teach you, such as your name, your enrollment, your progress, the work you submit, and your participation in live classes. Instructors are required to use this information only to deliver the Services.
  • Other students: If you participate in a live class, a community discussion, or an in-person event, other participants can see the information you choose to share there, such as your name, your camera and microphone if you enable them, your chat messages, and your posts.
  • Legal and regulatory requirements: We may disclose information about you in response to a subpoena, court order, or other governmental request, or as otherwise required by law.
  • To protect rights, property, and others: We may disclose information about you when we believe in good faith that disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the property or rights of Slam Academy, third parties, or the public at large — for example, if we have a good-faith belief that there is an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury.
  • Business transfers: In connection with any merger, sale of company assets, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business by another company, or in the unlikely event that Slam Academy goes out of business or enters bankruptcy, user information would likely be one of the assets transferred or acquired by a third party. If any of these events were to happen, this Privacy Policy would continue to apply to your information and the party receiving your information may continue to use your information only consistent with this Privacy Policy.
  • With your consent: We may share information with your consent or at your direction — for example, if you ask us to feature your work publicly.
  • Aggregated or de-identified information: We may share information that has been aggregated or de-identified so that it can no longer reasonably be used to identify you — for example, statistics about course completion rates.

Advertising and Analytics Partners

We use advertising and analytics services provided by other companies. These companies may set cookies, pixels, and similar technologies on our websites and in our emails that collect information about your device, your browsing activity on our websites, and your interactions with our ads on other sites and platforms. We may also share a hashed version of your email address with advertising platforms to show ads to you or to people with similar interests.

The information shared includes online identifiers, internet or other network activity information (such as cookie identifiers, other device identifiers, and IP address), and approximate location derived from IP address. Under some US state privacy laws, this is considered a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, or processing for "targeted advertising," and you have the right to opt out. See Your Rights below.

This Privacy Policy covers Slam Academy's collection of information. It does not cover collection by advertising or analytics providers for their own purposes.

Information Shared Publicly

Information that you choose to make public is disclosed publicly. That includes anything you post in public areas of the Services and any profile information you make visible. Public information may be indexed by search engines or used by third parties. Please keep this in mind when deciding what to share.

How Long We Keep Information

We generally discard information about you when it is no longer needed for the purposes for which we collected it and we are not legally required to keep it. Our general retention practices are:

  • Account and learning information: kept while your account is active, and for up to 24 months after your account is closed, after which it is deleted or de-identified. Certificates you earn and records of your purchases may be kept longer where required for tax, accounting, or credentialing purposes.
  • Live class recordings: kept for as long as the associated course or class is offered and for the access period promised to enrolled students, then deleted.
  • Payment and transaction records: kept as required by tax and accounting law, generally seven years.
  • Scholarship applications: kept for up to 12 months after a decision is made.
  • Event and travel information: kept for up to 12 months after the event, except information required for accounting purposes.
  • Marketing preferences: we keep a record of your opt-out for as long as needed to honor it.
  • Web server logs and analytics data: kept for up to 13 months.
  • Communications with support: kept for up to 24 months after the matter is resolved.

Information may remain in backups for a limited period after deletion until those backups are purged.

Security

No online service is 100% secure, but we work to protect information about you against unauthorized access, use, alteration, or destruction, and take reasonable technical, physical, and administrative measures to do so, including using vendors who maintain industry-standard security programs. If we learn of a security breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as required by applicable law, including Minnesota Statutes section 325E.61.

To enhance the security of your account, we encourage you to use a strong, unique password and to sign in through a provider that offers two-factor authentication where available.

Children

The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, do not create an account or provide any information to us. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at the address in How to Reach Us.

If you are between 13 and 17, you may use the Services only with the permission of a parent or legal guardian, who may contact us to review, correct, or delete your information.

We do not knowingly sell, share for cross-context behavioral advertising, or use for targeted advertising the personal information of anyone we know to be under 16.

Choices

You have several choices available when it comes to information about you:

  • Limit the information you provide: You can choose not to provide optional account and profile information. Some features — for example, in-person classes or travel events — require certain information in order to participate.
  • Participate without camera or microphone: You can attend live online classes without enabling your camera or microphone.
  • Opt out of marketing communications: You can unsubscribe from marketing emails using the link in every marketing email we send, and from text messages by replying STOP. We will still send you messages about your account, purchases, and classes.
  • Control cookies and targeted advertising: You can set your browser to remove or reject cookies, with the drawback that certain features of the Services may not function properly. You can opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for targeted advertising by using the "Your Privacy Choices" / "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link in the footer of our websites. We also honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signal as a valid opt-out request for the browser or device that sends it. Because our opt-out is managed through cookies, you will need to make this selection again if you clear cookies or use a different browser or device.
  • Close your account: You can close your account by contacting us. We may continue to retain some information after closure as described in How Long We Keep Information.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information.

European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland

If you are located in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, data protection law gives you certain rights with respect to your personal data, subject to any exemptions provided by law, including the rights to:

  • Request access to your personal data;
  • Request correction or deletion of your personal data;
  • Object to our use and processing of your personal data, including for direct marketing;
  • Request that we restrict our use and processing of your personal data;
  • Request portability of your personal data; and
  • Withdraw consent at any time where our processing is based on consent, without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority. We do not charge a fee for responding to these requests unless permitted by law.

United States

Laws in a number of US states — including Minnesota, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon, Texas, and Virginia, among others — give residents rights over their personal information. Subject to the exemptions in your state's law, you may have the right to:

  • Know and access the personal information we have collected about you;
  • Correct inaccurate personal information;
  • Delete personal information we have collected from you;
  • Obtain a copy of your personal information in a portable format;
  • Opt out of the sale of your personal information, the sharing of your personal information for cross-context behavioral or targeted advertising, and profiling in furtherance of decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects (we do not engage in such profiling);
  • Obtain a list of the specific third parties to whom we have disclosed your personal information, where your state's law provides this right (for example, Minnesota and Oregon);
  • Question the result of profiling where your state's law provides this right; and
  • Not be discriminated against for exercising your rights.

We do not charge a fee to respond to these requests, except where a request is manifestly unfounded, excessive, or repetitive and applicable law permits a charge.

California Notice at Collection. In the last 12 months we have collected the following categories of personal information, depending on the Services you use: identifiers (such as name, email address, phone number, IP address, and device identifiers); customer records (such as billing address and the last four digits of a payment card); commercial information (such as purchase history); internet or other electronic network activity information (such as your use of the Services and interactions with our websites and ads); geolocation data (approximate location from IP address); audio, electronic, visual, or similar information (such as your profile photo and live class recordings); education information (such as course progress and certificates); professional information (if you provide your profession or company); and inferences (such as course recommendations). If you apply for a scholarship, we may also collect information about your financial circumstances. We collect this information from the sources and for the purposes described above, share it with the categories of third parties described in Sharing Information, and retain it for the periods described in How Long We Keep Information. We "sell" or "share" identifiers, internet activity information, and geolocation data with advertising partners as described in Advertising and Analytics Partners. We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes other than those permitted without a right to limit under California law.

Exercising Your Rights

You can access and correct most of your account information through your account settings. To exercise any other right, or if you cannot make a change through your account, contact us using the details in How to Reach Us. We will respond within the time required by applicable law — generally within 45 days in the US and within one month in the EEA and UK, subject to extension where the law allows.

Before we disclose, correct, or delete anything, we will need to verify that you are the right person. If you have an account, we will generally ask you to contact us from the email address associated with it. You can also designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf by giving us written authorization; we may still ask you to verify your identity directly.

Appeals

In some circumstances we may deny your request — for example, if we cannot verify your identity, or if we are legally required to keep a copy of your information. If we deny your request, we will tell you in writing and explain why. You may appeal by replying to our decision and stating that you would like to appeal. Appeals are reviewed by a person who was not involved in the original decision, and we will respond in writing within the time required by applicable law. If your appeal is denied, we will tell you how to contact your state attorney general to submit a complaint. Minnesota residents may contact the Minnesota Attorney General's Office.

Other Things You Should Know

Transferring Information

Slam Academy is based in the United States, and the information we collect is processed and stored in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country. When we transfer personal information from the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland to the United States or another country, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as European Commission–approved standard contractual clauses (and the UK Addendum where applicable) with our vendors, or on your explicit consent where permitted. You can ask us for more information about these safeguards.

Third-Party Software and Services

The Services include links to and embeds from third-party services — for example, our Discord community, social sign-in providers, and embedded audio and video players. If you use these services, information about you will be handled in accordance with their privacy policies, which we encourage you to review. We do not own or control these third parties.

Do Not Track

Apart from the Global Privacy Control signal described above, we do not currently respond to "Do Not Track" browser signals because there is no common industry standard for them.

Privacy Policy Changes

Although most changes are likely to be minor, we may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page and the change log below. If the changes are material, we will provide additional notice, such as an email to registered users or a notice on our website, before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the Services after a change takes effect will be subject to the updated policy.

Change Log

  • September 8, 2026: Full rewrite. Replaced the prior policy, which was based on a United Kingdom template referencing repealed legislation, with a policy reflecting Slam Academy's actual practices and current US state, federal, and EEA/UK requirements. Added sections on children, retention periods, live class recordings, events and travel, scholarship applications, advertising opt-outs, Global Privacy Control, state privacy rights, appeals, and international transfers. Removed the fee for access requests.
